Waverley 'Where Were You' launch at Yah Yahs

Thursday morning and I can hardly hear myself think over the pounding, relentless rain on the roof of the warehouse. Good ol’Melbourne.

We’ve had a few days now since the launch of our first single at Yah Yahs and it’s been great receiving the feedback and other fun stuff from the night. We’ve just got back the photos as you can see right here, thanks to Tahlia Palmer. We’ve also been listening to snippets of a live recording from the night done by Aden and Vito at Head Rush… we may even do a giveaway of one of the tracks in the near future as they are sounding great.

We’d like to say a massive thanks to everyone for coming out, it was a great view from onstage to see people shoulder to shoulder singing along to the new batch of songs. Also, big thanks to Yah Yah’s for having us, particularly Heather and Rachael, a really awesome venue.

We’ll keep you updated with shows that we’ll be doing in the near future as we start making the video for our next single. And speaking of videos we’ve been getting a couple plays on rage with the Where Were You video which is putting very big smiles on our faces, please like them on Facebook and let them know you wanna keep seeing it!

I’ll leave you with a link to the review in Beat Magazine written up by Nicole Ryan who came out to check us out at the launch…

Well, here we are, a little over a week from the launch of our first single off ‘Challenger’, ‘Where Were You’. If you had spoken to any of us at the start of this year, when we were recording this mini album, I can almost guarantee that we would have expected the whole album to be out by now!

But, good things come to those who wait, as they say.

We are all extremely proud of what we’ve recorded, and can’t wait for everyone to hear the end result. We couldn’t have asked for better support and inspiration during, and after the recording.

As always, as we approach the launch, there are nerves floating around in all of us. But, speaking personally, I’ve been more nervous for other releases I’ve been involved in. With this recording, I believe we’ve done things our way, and in the end came out with a bunch of songs that speak from the heart, with confidence. The best result would be that people will also hear what WE hear in the songs, and want to listen to them!

Ok, down to the details. Next Friday, the 23rd of September, we will be launching our single ‘Where Were You’ at Yah Yah’s, 99 Smith St, Fitzroy. Opening up the night will be good friends of ours, Miyazaki!, followed by Newcastle rockers, The Owls.  Entry is $10, and with that you get a free single! You can’t lose!

We’d love to see all of our friends, friends of friends, friends of friends’ friends, and everyone we know there! It’s guaranteed to be a very special night!

Waverley Black and White

Busy times in the lead up to the release of ‘Challenger’, which we can now confirm is the name of our debut mini-album. Personally speaking, even having released a few albums and EPs in various music projects, I can honestly say this has taken me by surprise. The sheer amount of work ‘getting it right’ when you doing it yourself is pretty insane. From going back and forth on minute details in the artwork, to editing a music video with the most basic of knowledge on how to actually do it,  right through to buying little barcodes so the things can be scanned. There is just so much stuff that goes into getting the whole thing out there while trying to avoid the daunting prospect of sitting on 450 CDs that never sold under your bed for the next 2 years.

This leads us to our newest quandry, support acts for our ‘Where Were You’ Single launch. The venue is confirmed: Yah Yah’s in Fitzroy, the date is confirmed: Saturday the 17th of September, and now we just need you to get the word out that we’re looking for supports for what will be one hell of a night.

If you’re in a band that would suit the bill - or you know someone who is – shoot us an email at waverley@live.com.au and we’ll see what we can do!

Jack the Bear Mastering WaverleyTwo days ago Darius, Lee and I spent a day at the ‘offices’ of Jack the Bear at Deluxe Mastering to get the final touches on an album that has now been in the works for about a year.

First and foremost we were all blown away by how well set up the operation is at Deluxe, amazing rooms and a sound that will knock you off your feet (lucky we were all sitting cosy on a couch at the back of the room).

The whole process was remarkably simple and stress free, compared to the mountains of tweaks and changes we’ve lumped on Craig Harnath and Jez Giddings at Hothouse over the last month mixing, this seemed as simple as putting a CD in a disc drive. Of course we realised that this is anything but the truth the second the finished CD is played in our car on the way home and Darius and I had to do a double take after we both wet our pants.

The work Jack did was just priceless, it was like taking all the little pieces that already sounded amazing to us and just filling in every gap with his own brand of raw super glue. The style totally complements the

So it’s here now and I think all of us at Waverley are just dying to get peoples ears around this thing.

We’ll have a sample up really soon as we work towards releasing our first single, but in the meantime enjoy this little clip of us hanging out with a real inspiration and friend, Jack.

Waverley Master CD's

Tonight we’ll be rehearsing at Soundpark in Northcote and discussing all things mastering in anticipation of this Saturday’s mastering session of our debut mini-album with Tony ”Jack The Bear” at Deluxe Mastering.

It’s been a long time coming. We’ve gone through a lineup change, a change in singers (Darius is now fully taking the reins), an overhaul and rethink of the whole bands sound, dropped songs that didn’t work and changed others so much that they sound unrecognizable from their original demos. But finally, this weekend, we will be able to listen to our mini-album as it will be delivered to your ear! No more final tweaks, no changes, this will be it.

No relaxing after it’s all done though, because then it’s time to actually make something of all the hard work and get this thing listened to. We reckon it’s pretty fun, sounds like nothing I’ve ever heard and I just can’t wait till you hear it. Now we just need a name for it, but we’ve got some ideas floating around…

Daniel.
